Scalp treatments have been offered at spas for many years, often as an add-on to another service, and provide many bene ts to the client. In addition to the scalp mas sage being very relaxing, it also promotes circulation and hydrates the scalp, which can help prevent dandruff, dryness, and hair loss.
Recently, there has been a growing interest in these scalp treatments because of the opening of head spas in the U.S., an increase in spas using head spa equipment to offer the treatment in their current space, and viral TikTok videos showing the process. “There are so few protocols for maintaining the head and scalp health,” says Austin Brook, representative at K-Headspa. “That’s where head spas come into the picture. It represents an innovative approach to healing the scalp through a holistic treatment. The range of benefits the head spa offers is vast, including helping with thinning hair; detoxing; helping treat oily, dry, and sensitive skin; and more. The head spa’s benefits are incredibly comprehensive.”
Head spa treatments can vary, but a typical head spa treatment consists of a consultation to allow the client to discuss any scalp or hair concerns with the therapist; a scalp analysis that assesses the client’s scalp and provides insight on any specific concerns that can be addressed and treated; a gentle cleansing of the scalp using a mild cleanser to help remove dirt, oil, and product buildup; an exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores on the scalp; a massage consisting of a variety of techniques, including kneading, tapping, and circular motions to help stimulate blood circulation, and relax the scalp, neck, and shoulders; and depending on the guest’s scalp needs, an application of a specialized treatment, such as a hydrating mask, nourishing oil, or scalp serum, which is left on to allow for absorption. Next, steam or heat therapy may be used, followed by a rinse and conditioning treatment. Some spas also offer clients the option to receive a blowout or have their hair styled after the treatment.
