After more than three decades in luxury hospitality and wellness, people often ask me: "Why did you create Spa Director Diaries?"
The answer is simple. I didn't create it to tell my story; I created it because I didn't want our stories to disappear.
Like many spa leaders, my career didn't follow a straight path. I began in advertising, worked in food and beverage, led retail operations, and eventually found my true calling in the spa industry.
Looking back, every role taught me something I still carry with me today — how to listen, how to lead, how to create memorable experiences, and how powerful a great team can be.
What I didn't realize at the time was that I was collecting something much more valuable than job titles.
I was collecting stories.
Stories of opening new spas. Stories of mentors who changed my perspective with one conversation. Stories of therapists whose compassion transformed a guest's day. Stories of teams who accomplished what seemed impossible simply because they believed in one another.
Those are the moments that shaped my career.
Today, our industry is evolving faster than ever. New technologies, wellness trends, and innovative treatments continue to redefine the guest experience. That evolution is exciting, but it also made me realize something.
Many of the leaders who helped build this profession are quietly retiring.
Along with them go decades of wisdom, creativity, resilience, and leadership lessons that were never written down.
That's what inspired Spa Director Diaries.
It has become more than a blog. It's an editorial platform dedicated to preserving the stories behind exceptional spa experiences, celebrating the remarkable people who make our industry so special, and inspiring the next generation of spa leaders.
One of the greatest surprises has been what I've learned from the people I've invited to share their own voices. Through conversations with respected spa directors, educators, consultants, founders, and industry partners, I've been reminded that no matter where we work or how different our journeys may be, we all face many of the same challenges.
We all learn through experience. We all grow because someone believed in us. And we all have something worth sharing.
If there's one lesson these conversations have reinforced, it's this: leadership isn't measured by the number of spas we've opened or the awards we've received. It's measured by the people we've encouraged, the teams we've developed, and the legacy we leave behind.
That's the heartbeat of Spa Director Diaries. Because every great spa has a story. Every leader leaves a legacy.
And perhaps the greatest gift we can give the future of our profession is taking the time to share what we've learned before those stories are lost.
After all, today's diary entry could become tomorrow's leadership lesson.
