Face To Face (F2F), the humanitarian program created by the Educational and Research Foundation for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS Foundation), has gathered esteemed global facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons to restore a sense of normalcy — both physically and emotionally — to soldiers and civilians affected by devastating shrapnel wounds to the face. Since conflict began in the Ukraine, F2F has made three trips to the country, serving a total of 86 patients and teaching complex reconstructive techniques to hundreds of Ukrainian physicians and medical personnel across the country via live streams from operating rooms. In addition, more than 15 Ukrainian surgeons visited New York and Oklahoma for hands-on training over the last three years. A fourth F2F mission trip to Ukraine is being planned for May 2025. “With the ongoing and escalating nature of the war, we anticipate a significantly increasing number of patients with severe facial injuries requiring our expertise," says Manoj T. Abraham, MD, FACS, mission trip leader and senior advisor to the AAFPRS Face To Face Committee. "Training local surgeons to perform these complex procedures allows us to create a deeper and more lasting impact."
