What was the path that led you into the spa industry?

My journey started early, as I grew up surrounded by industry professionals and began at my mom's massage office working alongside my sister and other family members. Because it was a family business, I benefited from hands-on exposure to operations, combined with earning my business degree from Utah Tech University, which naturally steered me toward spa management.

What are the most challenging and rewarding parts of being in the spa industry?

One of the greatest challenges in the spa industry is staying ahead in an ever-evolving landscape while meeting—and exceeding—guest expectations. With the constant influx of new products and services, it’s essential to keep a spa relevant and aligned with current trends. At the same time, it’s crucial to strike a balance; I've seen spas lose guests by leaning too heavily into buzzy new treatments and completely neglecting the fundamentals of effective, healing therapies, which can alienate guests.

During my time as a massage therapist, I had the privilege of fixing people's injuries and witnessing their progress over time. Now, as a director, I experience that same reward on a broader scale—I get to hear positive feedback from guests and share it with our team, knowing we’ve made a meaningful impact.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Landing my current role as spa director for two iconic beachfront hotels in Los Angeles. It feels like a full circle moment, because for years I would bike along the Santa Monica boardwalk and stare at these two hotels thinking "One day, I'm going to work there." Now, I'm living that dream.

Where do you think the industry is heading?

I feel the industry is moving toward holistic wellness, which heals by treating the body, mind, and spirit together.

What’s your favorite skincare ingredient?

Hyaluronic acid—it’s a hydration hero that works for almost every skin type, like a tall glass of water for the skin!

What positions have you worked in that you feel has been most influential to your career?

Being an assistant spa manager at Milk + Honey was one of the most influential roles in my career. The director of operations at the time was an absolute powerhouse and an incredible mentor who helped me turn weaknesses into strengths. Her guidance left a lasting impact and shaped the manager I am today, and I often ask myself, "What would Teresa do?"

Was there a time you had to make a decision in your career that ended up changing your destiny? How did you handle that challenge and what was your thought process?

Absolutely. One of the most pivotal moments in my career was accepting the role of assistant spa manager for a soon-to-open day spa in Brentwood, CA. At the time I applied, California was emerging from COVID shutdowns, and I had been out of work for eight months—a period of uncertainty that made me question if I would ever return to the industry. Taking this position not only brought me back to work but also gave me the opportunity to move to Los Angeles.

The challenges were immense—moving to a new city, navigating ever-changing COVID regulations, and helping to launch a new spa. However, these hurdles pushed me to grow both personally and professionally, and the experience ultimately elevated my career in ways that continue to inspire me today.

If you could work in any other profession in the world, what would you be?

I love photography, and I used to dream of working as a photojournalist. Traveling the world to capture the beauty of different cultures, landscapes, and moments while exploring the world sounds like an absolute dream.

How would you sum up your personal philosophy?

My philosophy is simple: try to enjoy the phase of life you're in, embrace growth, and above all prioritize your health, both physical and mental health.

How do you like to spend your time away from work?

I love spending time at the beach as often as possible—soaking up the sun, walking by the water, or splashing in the waves. Recently, I've also begun a personal project photographing my favorite spots in Los Angeles. It's a great way to stay connected to the beauty and energy of the city.

What are your three greatest priorities in life?

Skincare, continuous learning, and exploring.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

Life is about phases, so don't be afraid to evolve. It taught me that change is not just inevitable, but essential for growth.
